Additional Information: | July-August 2001-This two-story, frame 19th century industrial building features shingled gable roofs, horizontal siding and six over six windows in the upper stories. A large brick chimney stands along the south side of the building and a large addition is attached to the north side of the main building. The lower story of the front elevation features one over one windows, a shed roofed porch, and a recessed entrance into the south end of the building. Statement of Significance: This building housed the Roettiger and Company Planning Mill and Carpenter Shop from 1882 until the turn of the 20th century. This mill, which was constructed on the site of a sawmill building 1857by Hon A. Finkelnburg, became known as the H & F Roettiger, Jr. Planning Mill at the turn of the 20th century. The Roettiger Company constructed numerous public and private buildings in the area. An electric light plant was installed in the building between 1898 and 1904. The electric plant furnished electric power for Fountain City until 1905. The Roettiger firm closed in 1993 and the buildings were sold. |
