It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. REAR 2-1/2 FLR PORTION W/CRENELLATED ROOFLINE. CNR ENTRANCE IN ALTERED 1ST FLR PORTION. TRANSOMS OVER DOORS. BRACKETED DENTICULATED EAVES W/CNR PEDIMENT. SITE OF HECK'S TAVERN, 1890. This building has an unusual brick parapet section on the rear of the building. Some time between 1911 and 1926, four feet of brick was added to the top of the parapet, creating a castlated parapet. According to the Sanborn Perris Insurance Maps, the building housed a saloon in the right hand portion and a dwelling on the left. The parapet section housed a refrigeration unit according to the 1911 Sanborn Map. This building was constructed in 1898 by Henry J. Kortendick as a replacement to an 1890 structure he had lost in Waterford’s downtown fire of 1898. He was born in 1860 in Wisconsin and his primary occupation (1910) was that of saloon keeper. He sold the building to John Heck in 1903. The eastern portion of the building was the Kortendick/Heck residence while the western half was a store. Heck initially operated a saloon and later an ice cream parlor. By 1940, the building was owned by his wife, Annie. Architecture/History Survey of STH 20, WisDOT ID#2250-12-00, Prepared by Heritage Research (2012). Building burned January 3, 2014.
