Additional Information: | "Jacob Breitenbach, born in Bavarian in 1830, emigrated to the United States when he was 19. He worked first as a farmhand for the owner of Picnic Point farm, and acquired his first 40 acres in 1854, mostly marsh land east of the University Bay Drive, but including some of the high ground west of the Drive where he built his house. He and his wife operated a "truck" farm, providing fresh vegetables for city residents. As he prospered, Jacob Breitenbach acquired more land and by the beginning of the 20th century. The part of the Breitenbach land west of University Bay Drive was acquired by John McKenna in 1912 for the development of the first College Hills plat. The streets between Colgate and Oxford Roads all the way to Shorewood Boulevard were laid out at this time by the noted landscape archtiect Ossian C. Simonds. The street names were chosen from distinguished colleges and universities." [A] |
