Additional Information: | March/June 2001-This dam impounds Elk Creek Lake. Thought to date to 1926 and spanning Elk Creek at a narrow gorge, it is a reinforced concrete structure with two Tainter gates and a spillway-all of which are defined by four piers. A small walkway extends from the east embankment across the two gates, and provides the platform on which is located the electric motor and gear mechanism that controls the gates. Several dams preceded the current structure, the last one of which was that associated with Eliza T. Wilson#25;s mill. It washed out in 1905. A new dam was built in 1926 by the Elk Creek Lake Land Company, which planned to create a new lake and thus promote the development of recreational opportunities. |
