Additional Information: | This house rises two stories from a stone foundation and is topped with a side-gabled roof accented with knee braces. The first floor is sheathed with stucco, while the upper level is covered with wooden shingles. An open and front-gabled porch follows the length of the primary facade. It is comprised of a battered or splayed porch base with wooden pier supports that rest upon a solid stuccoed porch wall. On the first floor a glass entry door with sidelights and a set of French doors open onto the porch. Two single multiple-light windows line the second level. Windows throughout the remainder of the house are generally multiple-light sash examples arranged singly and in pairs. Wood trim delineates the basement, first and second levels, and the four corners of the house. A one-story concrete block addition covers about half of the first floor of the rear facade. The house was built by Carl F. Volletz. Volletz was born in Germany in 1880 but moved to Surgeon Bay when he was an infant and was raised there by his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Volletz. He worked as a painter, decorator, wallpaper hanger, and part-time fireman. He married Mayme Bottkal and they had a son, John, who lived in the house following their marriage in 1931. Carl died in 1944, and his son in 1973. Previously surveyed in 2000. |
