Additional Information: | The old Grandview School is a one-story rural school building with a gable roof and clapboard walls. The relatively long building is punctuated on the side walls with two-over-two light double-hung sash windows. An entrance ell projects from the east elevation. A bell cupola sits at the roof peak at the east end of the building. The Grandview School was one of the few extant rural school buildings identified in the 1999-2000 survey of southwestern Monroe County. This was one of only two one-room public schools that still retains its integrity. Rural schools were the means by which most rural children received their education during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Due to remodeling and demolition, many of these buildings have been lost. They are architecturally and historically significant because they represent an important type of construction that was pervasive in rural Wisconsin and because they represent a type of education that was also pervasive in rural Wisconsin, a type of building and education that has long since passed into history. |
