Additional Information: | The Ole Larson Log house is a recently uncovered resource in the Town of Leon. Prior to the last year, the house was covere with clapboards and vertical wood siding. The survey photo shows it partially uncovered, but as of August, 2000, the entire building was uncovered and showed a total log exterior. It is a one and one-half story gabled ell house with walls constructed of hewn logs fitted tightly together with a minimun of chinking. The corners (as could be seen in August of 2000) are dovetailed, but the overall construction of the house is rather crude. The gable roof is covered with metal roofing and the house sits on a shallow stone foundation. There are several windows that punctuate the walls. It is known that many log houses were built in the Town of Leon, particularly in the southern section where Norwegian settlers dominated. However, most of these buildings are covered over with one or more layers of siding. This house is one of the few that is uncovered, in fact, uncovered recently, and is currently being used as a shed on the property, which includes a recently constructed modern home. Because it has been uncovered, and it is known that the original owner was of Norwegian ethnicity, this building can be studied to provide information about Norwegian log construction in the area. |
