Additional Information: | This five story, brick building rises from a concrete foundation and is topped with a flat roof. The building's west facade is vertically articulated into seven bays. The pronounced storefront level, featuring pier supports and stone trim, has been altered by the infilling of the display windows. Modern metal/glass doors rest beneath the modern signage, which identifies the central entry. Second floor openings feature tripartite, Chicago style windows; however, the central portion of each consists of blue, transparent glass. An overhead door for shipping/receiving is situated near the structure's northeast corner. After occupying a nearby site across the street for approximately four years, the American Household Supply Company erected this five story structure in circa 1916. President Louis Schuldes headed the company, which eventually changed its name to the American Household Furniture Co. By the mid-1930s, it was renamed the American Furniture Store. By the 1940s, the company had opened a second store in the city's central business district, located on Plankinton Avenue; however, in 1960, it was no longer listed in the city directory. The following year, the company moved to Wauwatosa, locating at 10625 W. North Avenue. In 1962, the subject structure was purchased by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which hired Milwaukee architects Brust & Brust to design an addition and to remodel. |
