Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Construction date, 1923. (1, 2) Sam Hersh, Builder. (2) Sam Hersh, Owner, 1923. (2) "Built in 1923 and designed by the architectural firm of George Zagel & Brother, the Louis Siegel Duplex is an example of the Prairie style of architecture. Characteristics of the style include wide, overhanging eaves, continuous bands of windows and a general horizontal emphasis. The lower portion of the exterior is faced with raked, light brown brick that was produced by the Alliance Clay Products Company of Reliance, Ohio, while the upper level is covered with stucco...the interior of each floor includes extensive woodwork, a fireplace, coved ceilings and decorative plaster wall and ceiling moldings. The third floor includes a pair of maid's quarters; one associated with each flat. This duplex was built by Louis & Nellie Siegel, who resided here for less than three years. Louis was born in 1888, in Grodna, Russia, and he immigrated to the United States in 1906. In 1915, he married Nellie Simon and together they had two daughters, Helen and Mildred. In 1925, and at the age of thirty-eight, Louis passed away from complications of nasal surgery. His obituary noted that he was the only Orthodox Jewish Funeral Director in the City of Milwaukee."
