NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:

The Schlitz Malthouse No. 4 building is constructed in the moderne style of brick, bearing on a coursed limestone foundation. It is difficult to be certain how many stories tall it is because the building has no wondow openings to convey a sense of scale, however, it is approximately eight stories. It is a subtly ornamented building, whose articulation is the result of strong structural statement . Pilasters bearing on the stone foundation rise uninterrupted the full height of the building. The pilasters project out from the wall surface in two steps, creating a tiered effect. The north, or street, elevation is divided by the pilasters into three primary bays. A closely spaced pair at each corner create two narrow vertical bands, exhibiting a repetitive decorative motif. Near the top a horizontal band, recessed behind the pilasters, ties the three bays together. The wall surface itself is articulated in horizontal bands by the use of a contrasting darker brick at every sixth course. The parapet is topped by a cut stone coping, which has geometric triangular motif. (1982 photo - 34-23)

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Joseph Schlitz brewing company Malthouse No. 4 (West Walnut Street between North Second and North Third Streets)

The building is an outstanding example of the Modern style. The conceptual severity of the basic design and the subtle treatment of details (such as the tiered pilasters, brick banding, and repetitive decorate bands) result in a very significant structure as part of the Schlitz complex. The building is similar to the one at the northeast corner of Third and Cherry Streets, but more important because it has a desgin clarity the other lacks.

Demolished MJ 9/18/1987.
