Additional Information: | 1999- "This commercial vernacular building at 354 Main Street is an amalgamation of several buildings and represents several construction episodes. The building consists of three sections and has two-story front gabled rooflines on each end. A shed-roofed addition extends from the eastern portion and connects to the western section under the eave. The original building was destroyed in the fire of 1910. A 2,000-square-foot building was constructed to replace the burned structure (this is the eastern, gabled portion of the building), and later, a second building was built (the western gabled section). In the mid-1950s, a 1,700-square-foot addition was added between the two earlier buildings, connecting the three buildings into one unit. In the 1970s more additions were made. The building is sided in several materials, including stamped steel on the north and west facades; vinyl on the second-story and top-half portion of the front facade; faux lava rock on the lower half of the street level; and brick on the east facade. Portions of the building rest on a rubble stone foundation. A large metal-sided addition exists at the rear of the building. Swiss chalet-style balconies have been added under second-story windows. The building is currently operated as a hardware store." -"Allenton 7.5, Washington Co.", WisDOT#1412-02-00, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc., (1999). |
