Additional Information: | CORNER BRICK PILASTERS 2023: This one-story industrial building was constructed c. 1920. The brick building has a rectilinear footprint, concrete foundation, and a front-gable roof with a raised center cupola. The roof is sheathed in overlapping, corrugated, metal strips and the gable faces are accented with brick corbelling. The cupola walls are clad in standing seam metal siding. The north and south (side) elevations are organized into ten bays separated by brick pilasters. Each bay contains two rectangular window openings with smooth sills; all windows on the building have been boarded up. On the façade (east elevation), four segmental-arch window and door opening have been enclosed with concrete block or metal siding. The building is only accessible from a replacement door on the easternmost bay of the façade. An almost entirely faded ghost sign is still visible on the center of the façade. The west (rear) elevation contains a secondary entrance, and the exterior brick is partially parged. This building was constructed as part of the American Skein & Foundry Company complex, which once occupied the western side of Sheridan Road from Durand Avenue to 23rd Street. This building, as well as the two-story cream brick building facing Sheridan, and the one-story red brick building at 24th Street, were added to the complex around the time it was expanded to include operations of the American Piano Plate Company in 1918. In the early 1970s, the American Skein & Foundry Company became ASF Corporation, and nearly all operations had been discontinued at the Racine location by the close of 1971. |
