Additional Information: | Map code 0709-184-0501-4. Cream and vari-colored brick, metal window frames, decorative panels. Addition in 1959. This building was first used as an elementary school until the summer on 1979. The first principal was A. Kermint Frater, then Don Haugen was the principal until the school closed. Mr. Haugen's wife, Bev (Stark), grew up in the neighborhood. The Madison Business College occupied the building from 1980 to 1994. In 1996, the MMSD opened the middle school, which has an environmental focus. 2010- "This previously inventoried Contemporary educational building is located on the west side of Spring Harbor Drive, north of its intersection with University Avenue. The school faces east (not toward University Avenue), and the long axis of its roof is oriented perpendicular to Spring Harbor Drive. The asymmetrical building consists of a one-and-one-half story, front-facing section and a one-story side-facing section. The entire building rests on a poured concrete foundation and is faced with cream and multi-colored brick. The low-pitched, gabled roof displays cantilevered eaves and has been sheathed with asphalt shingles. Metal curtain windows and bands of metal windows can be seen throughout the school. The Spring Harbor Middle School features design elements indicative of 1950s-60s architecture, including unusual roof lines, cantilevered overhangs, window banding, curtain windows, patterned brick, and walls extending into the landscape. The school retains maintains good integrity." - "CTH MS (University Ave), Allen Boulevard-N Segoe Rd", WisDOT ID #5992-08-12(79), Prepared by Rachel E Bankowitz and Elizabeth L Miller (2010). |
