Dissatisfaction with Evangelical Methodism lead to the formation of the Milwaukee City Mission and Extension Sociey. First building was located on N. 27th in 1884. Congregation was renamed in 1904 to Wesley Methodist Episcopal. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Central United Methodist is a fine example of a small Gothic Revival church. Constructed of red sandstone its facade is dominated by two tower elements, one greater, one lesser and the massive arched windows of stained glass. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Dissatisfaction with the philosophy and tenents of English Methodism resulted in the establishment of the Millwaukee City Mission and Extension Society. Their first building was at N. 27th and Wells Streets, and were known as Washington Avenue Methodist Episcopal. In 1904 they moved to thier present site and were renamed Wesley Methodist Episcopal. |
