""The first Episcopal church on the south side, St. John's was founded June 7, 1847. Although few attended the first service in the frame church at South 3rd and West Pierce Streets, the congregation soon increased its number and in 1852 erected a larger building on the same lot. There the church remained until the city acquired it some eighty years later. Today the carved oak altar, black walnut pulpit, twin plaques with the Lord's Prayer, and the Creed, and memorial windows in the chapel--all brought from the church in Walker's Point--are reminders of its early history.""
