Additional Information: | On October 22, 2007 the WHS requested photo documentation of the property prior to demolition. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Excellent example of typical cream brick factory with integrity of form and appearance. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Established in 1858, the A.F. Gallun Tannery built the Empire Tannery in 1876. They continued to expand both at this location and across the river at their Phoenix Tannery until they became one of the largest tanneries in the U.S. Also, one of Milwaukee's oldest businesses. |
