Additional Information: | Public squares were plotted when towns in new territories were surveyed and Haymarket Square is an example of this. When laid out in 1836, it extended one block east and west of Main St. between 5th and 6th streets. The area served as a central market for farm products and as the hub of the city's commercial activitiy. It became known as Monument Square after the dedication of the Civil War monument. The Square was also the site of the courthouse until the 1930s and remains an important social space in the downtown. It became cit's meeting place and market place and was at first called Haymarket Square, which was later shortened to Market Square. In 1884 a Civil War monument was dedicated and thereafter it became known as Monument Square. |
