Additional Information: | ELABORATE HEAVY MOULDED METAL CORNICE. 2 STORY BLIND ROUND ARCHES. LIMESTONE SILLS AND HEAVY LIMESTONE LINTELS. ORIGINALLY A DRY GOODS STORE. As of 1887 the building served as a crockery. THIS STORE WAS BUILT FOR ALANSON H. LEE AND JOHN DICKSON, WHO CAME TO RACINE IN THE 1840s. THEY OPENED A DRY GOODS BUSINESS IN THE JUDD BLOCK AND MOVED IT HERE WHEN THE BUILDING WAS COMPLETED. LEE DIED IN 1861 AND DICKSON CLOSED THE STORE IN 1865. HE WAS ONE OF THE INCORPORATORS OF RACINE AND ROCK RIVER PLANK ROAD--THE FIRST TOLL ROAD IN THE COUNTY--AND HE WAS ONE OC THE PRIME MOVERS IN OBTAINING A FRANCHISE FOR THE RACINE AND MISSISSIPPI RAILROAD. |
