1988- "J. Stephens Tripp, for whom Tripp Hall is named, moved to Wisconsin in 1853 and was postmaster of Sauk City from 1854 to 1861, president of Sauk city for eight years, town clerk of Prairie du Sac for 16 years, village president of Prairie du Sac for 20 years, and member of the Sauk County Board of Supervisors for 15 years. In 1862 he was a member of the Wisconsin Assembly. He left almost all his fortune, more than $600,000, to the University when he died in 1915."
