Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Madison Historic Landmark: 11/2/1971. October 2014 - The Alexander Smith House is a pre-Civil War Greek Revival residence with a gable ell form and heavy stone construction. It is set back from Milwaukee Street by a considerable distance beyond an expansive lawn with mature trees. The two-story front gable section was constructed in 1848 for Alexander Smith, apparently by regional Cornish craftsmen using locally quarried stone. The facade features an off-center raised main entry, six-over-six wood sash windows, a plain frieze, and cornice returns. Stone lintels and sills form the window openings. The door surround includes sidelights and a transom. The one-story, side-gabled ell was added in 1861 and contains a projecting three-sided bay window and raised secondary entry flanked by a six-over-six wood sash window on each side. Concrete stoops with metal railings provide access to the two entry doors. There are no additional buildings or structures on the property. Smith's second wide, Ellen, lived in the house until 1920, and purportedly offered rooms to passing travelers. Notable alterations are limited to the conversion of the east end of the one-story ell from a garage to a utility room and kitchen in 1946. Altogether, the house retains a high degree of integrity. March 2018 - appearance unchanged since 2014. 2022: Appearance unchanged since 2018. East of the house is a modern, three-bay garage. |
