Additional Information: | ORIEL ON FRONT. This building housed the Star Brewery in 1879 and the Northside Brewery in 1887. Resurveyed 2013; no visible changes. This 2-story Queen Anne commercial building was constructed c.1915. It is rectangular in plan with red brick walls and a flat roof with slight parapet. The front elevation faces west and is asymmetrical in plan with two recessed doors and banks of shop windows at the first story. The second story contains two 1-over-1 windows and a three-sided bay containing two 1-over-1 windows and a central picture window with transom. Dentil detailing is located above and below the bay window. A projecting awning roof spans the fagade above the bay window and is ornamented with small modillions. This building is in good condition and retains a moderate degree of integrity (original transom windows and/or panels are missing from the first story and some second-story windows are recent replacements). As a Queen Anne commercial building, its primary distinguishing features are the second-story bay window and the modillion detailing below the roofline. Other than these elements, the building is not distinctly representative of Queen Anne architecture. A finer representative of the Queen Anne style as applied to a commercial building is located nearby at 1673-77 Douglas Avenue. This building was previously surveyed in 1979; no changes are visible. The AHI record was updated with the new survey date and unchanged appearance. |
