"Douglas Avenue was called St. Clair Street in the 1850's when this house was built. The house is in the modest Greek Revival style popular in the Midwest at that time. Although it has been covered with aluminum siding, few other exterior changes have been made, The sun's early morning rays still filter through the narrow side and transom lights that have graced the front entrance for over a century. The greenhouses of early owner Charles Fountain, however, have long since disappeared. Fountain purchased the property from Louis F. Henderickson in 1857 and lived there until 1862 when Sister Benedicta Bauer acquired it for the Sisters of Charity. The house served as the first Dominican Convent in Racine for a year. In 1863 it was purchased by Joseph Lechner and has remained in that family." Renewing Our Roots: The Northside, Racine, Wisconsin, Preservation-Racine, Inc., not dated. |
