NOTES
Additional Information:Hahn was the builder. Adolph Haise was the drug store owner in 1921. Architectural Statement: Description: The building is a two-story brick masonry commercial structure on the corner of North Third and East Brown Streets. It has a gable roof abutting the back of the storefront which steps up to cover the roof peak. The building is one structural bay wide. The facade reflects the split between storefront and residence by being virtually all glass on the ground floor and brick above. The storefront entry is offset from the middle to accomodate the second floor entry on one side. The three upper windows are equally spaced segmental arch openings with window hoods. Above this is the elaborate cornice with four brackets and a raised triangular pediment. The frieze is adorned with a small circular motif. (1982 photo - 36/26). Significance: The building is a fine example of the Victorian Italianate Commercial style and is virtually intact. The upper cornice, rising to the center with a spearate triangular pediment on the top, is especially unique. Also, the level of small detailing is very well developed at the top. As such, it is an architecturally significant building in the North Third Street commercial area. Historical Statement: The building was designed by architect H. Messmer, a German who designed many buildings in the area, and built by a contractor named Hahn in 1891. The original owner was Herman Mayer who operated a crockery business in the store. He owned the building until 1906 and died in 1932. Excellent example of a typical three bay brick store of this date in nearly original condition with elaborate original cornice and elements of an early storefront intact. Locally designated district: 6/16/87.
