South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide: "William Crawford, blacksmith, built the original section of this house. In 1890 this became the home of Thomas Marcher, a traveling salesman. About 1900 Thomas died and his daughter, Cora Bickel moved in. Cora's husband, John, was president of Racine General Manufacturing Company, which made wagon hardware. Their son, Frederick, lived here until he went to the University of Wisconsin and later to Hollywood. Adapting his grandparents' surname, he became Fredrick March (1897-1975)--one of the most famous film stars of Hollywood's "Golden Age."" |
