South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide: "In 1971 the Reverend Edward Porter, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Reverend James DeKoven, president of Racine College, and the Doctors John G. Meachem, Senior and Junior--"with the assistance of a few others"--rented a small house and opened Racine's first hospital. The following year is was incorporated as St. Luke's Hospital because most of its organizers were members of St. Luke's Church. In 1875 Edward and Julia Porter donated two lots on the corner of College and Thirteenth; the following year this building was designed and construction began. It opened in February of 1877. St. Luke's Hospital has remained on the site and has grown considerably in the years since to completely surround its original building." |
