NOTES
Additional Information:OLD STABLE OR LIVERY; NOW GARAGE. This building housed the teams of horses used in and about the Mitchell and Lewis Wagon Works complex. This building is all that remains of the factory complex. This complex covered several acres at the intersection of Washington, Center and 6th. Henry Mitchell moved to Racine in 1853 and began the Mitchell Wagon Works in 1854. W.T. Lewis became a partner in 1864 and in 1886 the name Mitchell, Lewis and Co. was assumed. The company continued to grow and supposedly became one of the largest manufacturers of all types of wagons in the country, with international sales. In 1903, the firm developed an automobile but it was not until 1910 that it became the Mitchell-Lewis Motor Co.
