Additional Information: | TUSCAN PORTICO,STONEWINDOW SURROUNDS Charles Roy McCanna was born in nearby Springfield in 1881, the son of Charles Bernard McCanna. The McCanna family moved to Burlington in 1887. After his father’s death in 1913, Charles Roy McCanna took over leading the Wisconsin Condensed Milk Company and was upped from secretary to president of the Burlington Brass Works. He led the Condensed Milk Company until it was sold in 1919 to the Nestlé Foods Corporation of Vevey, Switzerland. Under his leadership as president, and later board chairman and director, the Brass Works experienced great success and was awarded two Army-Navy Production Awards, one in 1944 and the other in 1945, for its production of 75mm, 3-inch, and 90mm shells during World War II. Charles Roy McCanna succeeded his father as the president of the Bank of Burlington, and served as such from 1914 to 1947, and board chairman from 1947 to 1967. During 1916 and 1917, Charles Roy McCanna acquired seven residential lots on the southeast corner of State and Kane Streets, including the non-extant Dr. Edward Galusha Dyer House. After the demolition of these buildings, McCanna’s large house was constructed on there in 1919. The Charles Roy & Elfreida McCanna House is located at 101 E. State Street. McCanna also served on Burlington’s first park board in 1927. After his death in 1975, McCanna’s residence was renovated to house the McCarthy-Koenig Funeral Home. |
