Additional Information: | 2016 - One-story, brick-clad octagon with large, round chimney. Windows and doors have been replaced or filled in. 2021 - This small building was constructed c.1955 as the Brady Street Lift Station (operated by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and its preceding agencies to pump wastewater from industries along the river to the Jones Island wastewater treatment plant). It is octagonal in plan with brick walls and a flat roof with concrete coping. Each corner is accentuated by a brick accent wall that rises less than the full heigh of the building and features concrete coping at the top. A vehicular entrance in the north elevation contains a pair of metal security doors. West of this is a pedestrian scale entrance containing a metal security door with a concrete stoop; a transom opening above has been infilled with an opaque panel or board. A single-pane window with a concrete sill is located in the wall east of the vehicular bay. A wide metal pipe stands just west of the pedestrian entrance and rises vertically to approximately twice the height of the building. In 2000, metal sculptures of animals (titled “Cavorting Critters”) by Racine artist Bill Ried have been added to the upper portion of the pipe. A curved stone retaining wall is located behind the building. |
