NOTES
Additional Information:Previously surveyed in 1974. 2010: A one-story, flat-roofed, brick addition (circa 1938) surrounds the three-story 1902 block along both its south and east elevations, while a separate and modern, one-story entry is located further north along the east elevation. Extending from the structure's west elevation is a one-story addition that was added in 1930; the storefront of which has been more recently modernized. This portion of the former hotel is currently known as the Sunrise Cafe. Based on historic photographs, it is clear that a significant amount of alterations have occurred to the building. Indeed, the historic photos depict a three-story brick structure with an open, wraparound porch and that was later tastefully enclosed with glass windows. The second- and third-story porches that formerly graced both the south and east elevations have since been removed and the original one-story porch was removed and the existing brick addition was constructed. Built in 1902 and historically known as the Wayside Hotel, this is the second hotel structure to be located on this lot. In 1900, Mahlon Colburn purchased the earlier structure and had it moved from the premises in order to construct the subject building. Colburn retired from the hotel business in 1905 and the structure changed hands no less than eight times in the next twenty years. The second and third-story porches to the south and east were added at some point between 1912 and 1926. In 1930, the one-story structure adjacent to the west was built and, eight years later, the hotel's one-story, wraparound open porch was enclosed to provide for space to accommodate two stores. The hotel's longest term owners include George Dunn and Betty & Gene Nashold from circa 1944 to 1965 and the Pokorny family (from 1965 through at least 1987). 2024: Resurveyed. Little change evident. Update photo.
