Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Previously surveyed in 1974. The house was built in 1912 by James L. Stokes, who was born in Wisconsin c. 1877. At the age of eight, he and his family moved from Dodge County to Waterloo, Wisconsin. He married in 1906, at which time he was working as a hardware store clerk in Harvard, Il. The following year, Stokes joined his brother Frank C. and Chicagoan Ben Carpenter in establishing a ditching and draining business that was later named the Wisconsin drainage Company. James remained in the drainage business until his death in 1936. Stokes served as mayor of Elkhorn in 1916-1917 and, during his tenure, he is cited as responsible for a number of improvements to the city's infrastructure, as well as for being one of the proponents in relocating Frank Holton & Co., to Elkhorn from Chicago. The Stokes family remained in the subject house until at least 1960. The next known owner was James Cost. |
