Although the home was under the ownership of Flavius Harrington at the time the house was built, it is believed that the first occupant of the home was John J. Devor, the owner and editor of the Walworth County Independent. Devor sold the house to Sheriff George Wylie in 1882. Wylie was born in New York in 1826 and came to Wisconsin in 1842. After farming for eighteen years in the Town of Lafayette, Walworth County, he was elected Walworth County Sheriff. After serving in the Civil War, he returned to serve another term as sheriff, after which he returned to farming. In 1882, he moved to this house, where he remained until his death in 1903. Wylie served as the marshal of the Walworth County Fair for over 50 years.
