Sunset Circle Residential Historic District
Village of Allouez
Brown County, WI
The Sunset Circle Residential Historic District is a collection of single-family residences and a small, open park set around Sunset Circle along the east bank of the Fox River in the Sunlight Park Subdivision in the Village of Allouez, Brown County, Wisconsin. Collectively, the residences in the historic district are a distinct and unified entity that is representative of the eclectic interpretations of the Colonial Revival style in the mid to late-twentieth century. The broader Sunlight Park Subdivision, in which the subject historic district is located, was platted in 1919 and opened for construction in 1932. The houses in the Sunset Circle Residential Historic District were constructed between 1940 and 1989 and are indicative of the architectural housing types and interpretations of the Colonial Revival style that were popularized during World War II and in the post-war period. The houses in the Sunset Circle Residential Historic District exemplify the Colonial Revival style as it was interpreted throughout the mid to late twentieth century and was applied to the Ranch style and two-story houses. Generally, these Colonial Revival influences consist of orderly facades, entrances with sidelights, dentil cornices, raised quoins, wide frieze bands, and eave returns. Of the Ranch style houses, all display a characteristic horizontal emphasis, low-pitched roofs, and recessed entrances while some feature wide overhanging eaves, contrasting cladding materials, and picture windows. One of the residences was designed in the Mansard style, exhibiting brick quoins, arched windows and arched window openings, mansard roof line with projecting dormer, and retains excellent integrity. The historic district is further distinguished by the horseshoe-shaped, curvilinear street lined with mature trees, wide lots, and the open, grassy Sunset Park. |
