SUMMARY
Sparta High School
201 East Franklin Street, Sparta, Monroe County
Architect: Parkinson & Dockendorff (1924 School)
Date of Construction: 1922 - 1924 with additions in 1967 and 1977

The Sparta High School at 201 East Franklin Street in Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin, was designed as a junior-senior high school by the prominent La Crosse architectural firm of Parkinson & Dockendorff. The high school was constructed from 1922 through 1923 and opened in January of 1924. The three-story, Collegiate Gothic style school building replaced the town’s Victorian-era high school building on the same site. The Sparta High School provided public secondary-level education for grades seven through twelve from 1924 until 1962, when a new Sparta Senior High School building was constructed. Opening ceremonies for the Sparta High School were held in the school’s gymnasium on New Year’s Day in 1924, with the Sparta Herald declaring the school a “fine new temple of learning” that “marks a decisive step in the progress of the city.”

The Collegiate Gothic style and expansive size of the Sparta High School communicated its importance as the town’s sole public high school building. The fireproof structure was clad with red and brown face brick with ornamental limestone entrance surrounds. The Sparta High School contained sixty-two rooms across its three floors. Junior and senior-level classes were held in separate wings of the school, while the center portion of the school contained a double-height gymnasium, shared classrooms, and administrative offices. The school featured several specialized classrooms reflecting the breadth of the curriculum. The Sparta High School’s curriculum featured academic studies intended to prepare students for college as well as practical classes for those wishing to enter a vocation upon graduation. These programs included Manual Training, Domestic Sciences, Commercial/Business studies, and Agriculture.

After the Sparta Senior High School was completed in 1962, the building continued in use as the Sparta Junior High School until 1990, and then the Sparta Middle School until 2001.
