SUMMARY
Antoine and Sarah Gordon House
9717 County Road Y, Town of Gordon, Douglas County
Date of Construction: 1859
Builder: Antoine Gordon

The Antoine and Sarah Gordon House is a log cabin located in northern Wisconsin, in the Town of Gordon, Douglas County. It was constructed by Antoine Gordon in 1859 to serve as his home and trading post, as well as a hotel for the new stagecoach line connecting Fort Snelling in Minnesota with the newly established City of Bayfield. A second log house was added to the front façade of the 1859 building in 1874, and in 1900 the exterior was clad with wooden siding, a common alteration following the pioneer era which signaled the prosperity of the owner.

Antoine and Sarah Gordon and their family are associated with the transition of the Ojibwwa/Chippewa and Métis cultures following the end of the Fur Trade Era. Due to the Gordon family’s ties with the Chippewa tribes of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, the area surrounding the Gordon home and trading post remained a largely native and métis settlement well into the 1880s. Antoine Gordon’s business and philanthropic activities in Gordon helped to establish and grow the community, and he is considered the founder of the town. His property and its development over time are also indicative of the evolution of settlement trends during the second half of the nineteenth century.

The home is privately owned; please respect their privacy.
