SUMMARY
Haven-Crandall House
Milton, Rock County, Wisconsin
Date of Construction: 1872

The Haven-Crandall House is a high-quality, Italianate style houses in the City of Milton. It is an elegant home with fine brick construction and historic character.

Originally built in 1872, the house was lived in briefly by the Haven family, but it is the next owners, Albert Crandall and his daughter, Alberta, who made their mark in Milton. Albert grew up in New York State and first attended college at Alfred University there. He attended Milton College and went to Harvard University, where he studied zoology and collected specimens for the Museum of Comparative Zoology there.

In the 1880s, Crandall taught at a college in Kentucky, worked for the Kentucky geological survey, and worked on a Ph.D. that he received from Milton College. After teaching at Alfred University as a professor of natural science, he came back to Milton in 1903 to take a similar position at Milton College. There he completed his career, working into the 1920s. He was one of the most important and best educated professors in Milton College history.

Alberta Crandall continued to live in the house for over 45 years. She was also a notable professor at Milton College, having attended the New England Conservatory of Music. She worked as a professor of music at Milton College until 1950 and after her retirement, gave piano lessons in this house until 1970. She died in 1975 at the age of 96. The Crandall family’s 50 year association with Milton College is remarkable in the history of the college.
