Franklin School 1011 South Main Street, Rice Lake, Barron County Date of Construction: 1936, addition 1949 Architect: William Linley Alban This striking grade school building was designed in the Art Deco style reflecting the community's individual spirit and willingness to embrace modernity. Constructed in 1936, the peak year of public building by the Works Progress Administration and within the midst of the Great Depression, the city of Rice Lake took the unusual step of funding the construction of the building without Federal aid. The modern design of the building is reflected in the distinctive characteristics of the Art Deco style with its emphasis on verticality; the tall pilasters with capitals projecting above the cornice line and having low-relief, geometric, stylized torch ornament; machine-crafted details such as the projecting curvilinear lintel over the main entry; and the use of metal lettering for the school's name. On the interior, it featured a library, gymnasium and graded classrooms, continuing the theme of modernity and reflecting the most current philosophies of educational facility design.
