SUMMARY
Ella M. Boesel Boathouse
9282 Country Club Road, Minocqua, Oneida County
Date of Construction: 1935

The Ella M. Boesel Boathouse is an example of a wet boathouse designed with elements of the Craftsman style, including its simple form, use of clapboard and board-and-batten siding, exposed rafter ends, brackets, and multi-pane windows. The two-story building stores boats on the first floor, while the second floor serves as a living space. The Ella M. Boesel Boathouse retains its original siding and features, serving as an intact example of the boathouses that historically dotted the lakeshore.

The prevalence of historic boathouses in the Minocqua area reflects the growth of tourism in the region during the 1900s. As early as 1898, the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad advertised the Minocqua area as a resort destination. Indeed, because of the railroad's transportation and advertisements, as well as the diminishing supply of lumber in the region during this time period, many people built resorts and summer homes in the Minocqua area. Most of these resorts and homes included boathouses to safeguard boats from weather and waves.

The boathouse is private property. Please respect the rights and privacy of the owners.
