SUMMARY
Daniel and Nellie Byrns House
221 Mill Street, Lodi, Columbia County
Construction Date: 1915

The Daniel and Nellie Byrns bungalow sits on a hillside that overlooking the city of Lodi. The home's first story is clad in wide clapboards, while its gable ends and dormers are clad in narrower clapboards; this is a design feature frequently found on Craftsman Style and Prairie School style houses built in the same period. Of special note is the wraparound screened porch that covers much of the front and part of the side of the house. The Byrns house is also notable for its fine built-ins and for the high quality of the materials used in its construction.

Daniel D. Byrns was born in Ireland in 1870, as was his wife, Nellie, who was born there in 1877. After arriving in Wisconsin they operated a farm in the countryside outside Lodi, but by 1915 they had moved into Lodi itself, where Byrns was a grocery store owner. In 1915, Daniel and Nellie purchased the corner lot across the street from the house they had been renting and began to build the house that would symbolize their economic success.

The house is a private residence. Please respect the privacy of the owners.
