Tomah Post Office 903 Superior Avenue, Tomah, Monroe County Date of Construction: 1927 Architect: W.C. Lyon, James Wetmore Built in the Neo-Classical Revival style, the Tomah Post Office symbolizes the stability and status of the federal government. Designed by W.C. Lyon under supervising architect James A. Wetmore, the building was the first constructed specifically to house the United States Postal Service in Tomah. The design of the Tomah building reflects the use of standard plans and designs for post offices by the supervising architect’s office. In siting post offices, criteria reflected the use of the facility and the manner in which it was designed to function. Post offices that included other federal offices or courts were often located near other governmental buildings in the community. Single-function post offices built prior to the 1930s were often located on or near the community’s downtown near the railroad station to facilitate movement of mail to and from trains. The former post office has been converted to offices. |
