Currently operated as Rock Island State Park, the district is accessible only by boat on a small island at the tip of the Door County peninsula. The 777-acre estate was the retreat of Chester Thordarson, a Chicago electrical inventor and businessman. The 12 buildings were constructed in the 1920s of solid stone walls and heavy tile roofs, including the massive boathouse-casino on the shoreline and several outbuildings. The project may have been Thordarson's attempt to create a replica of his native Iceland. |
