Nicholas Haight Farmstead
4926 Lacy Road, Fitchburg, Dane County
Date of Construction: 1855
The Nicholas Haight Farmhouse is a good example of a property that has evolved, both in appearance and use, while still maintaining a high level of historic integrity. The land was first bought by Edwin Spooner, an emigrant from Massachusetts, in 1852. He began to improve the land for farming and built the Greek Revival house with limited stylistic detailing that still stands today.
Spooner sold the property to Nicholas Haight in 1867, and it was Haight who was responsible for further improvements to the land, the four additions to the original house, and the construction of the contributing farm buildings (including a smokehouse, barn, corn crib, and granary), all built before 1900. He also diversified production on the farm from mostly wheat to include livestock and feed crops, and subsequently, dairy products.
The farmhouse and its many additions form a U-shaped farmstead. The house maintains an exterior integrity that is comparable to or greater than other local examples of that age and architectural style. As such, the Haight Farmstead represents a property that, though very different from its original construction, is an example of evolution and historic integrity going hand in hand.
