Tail of a Lodestar aircraft at Townsville Airfield, Queensland, Australia. The Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar was a passenger transport aircraft of the World War II-era. The caption written for the newspaper by Robert Doyle reads, "This is one of my favorite snapshots. It was made at one of the busiest-and hottest-airfields in Australia-en route to New Guinea" (present day Papua New Guinea). |

This image was published in the Milwaukee Journal on March 26th, 1944. The image and article appear on page 138 of the clipping book, Anybody Here From Wisconsin?, a reprint of the scrapbook kept by Robert Doyle's mother. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
