![Doyle Filling Jeep with Gasoline A smiling Robert Doyle holds the nozzle to the gas pump with one hand and gives the "thumbs up" sign with the other at the Kangaroo Korner Gas Station near the entrance to the 5th Air Force Headquarters near Port Moresby, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). He is filling his jeep with fuel. "War Corr[espondent]" is stenciled below the windshield. Signs overhead read, "We Fill Anything Bound For Japan For 'Free,'" "24 Hour Service, If Attendant Isn't Around, Help Yourself" and "No Smoking." Behind Doyle is a tent. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
