"When Lyman Copeland Draper secured the post of corresponding secretary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in January 1854, he found a library of fifty books in his office in Madison's first capitol. Draper embarked upon an ambitious collecting program and before eleven months went by, he had added one thousand titles to the library. Two years later, the figure stood at 110,000. This bookcase is what Lyman Draper found when he began his mission with the Society; his legacy is all around you." |
