One Penny Buys $300 Hearing Aid
A man and woman examine a rare penny. The penny was a 1856 Indianhead, called a Flying Eagle Cent. Only 1,000 of those coins were struck. The penny was worth about $500 to coin collectors (as of 1958). The man holding the penny was Gorden Gill and the onlooker was Betty (Mrs. D.C.) Whitford. Both were past presidents of the Madison Coin Club, an organization with about 35 active members. Mrs. Whitford, whose husband owns a hearing aid business, sold a $300 hearing aid to Mr. Gill in exchange for the rare penny. Gill said Whitford got "much the better of the deal." |
