State Fair Centennial Mural Study Sketch
Prior to the 1948 State Fair, artist Robert Hodgell traveled Wisconsin to study its many landscapes. He then produced a series of study sketches outlining the mural compositions. This is one of his original study sketches. This scene shows a farmer using a simple elevator machine to load silage into a concrete stave tower silo. A belt attached to a tractor's power-take-off shaft would power the machine, but the tractor is missing in this depiction. The farmer at the center of this mural is spraying his fence line with an herbicide to control the growth of weeds. Holstein cows graze on the hill in the background. |
