State Fair Centennial Mural Study Sketch
Prior to the 1948 State Fair, artist Robert Hodgell traveled Wisconsin to study its many landscapes. He then produced a series of study sketches outlining the mural compositions. This is one of his original study sketches. This scene depicts a red dairy barn with its stone foundation, hayloft, and cupolas. Made from galvanized steel and measuring over six feet tall, the cupolas served to ventilate hot air from the hayloft. An old milk can holds up the mailbox. The truck is hauling raw milk from a classic Wisconsin dairy farm to the local dairy or cheese factory. The opening at the top of the barn shows the barn's hayloft already full, perhaps from the first cut of the season. |
