Email received on August 27th, 2020. Eugene Lambin was 11 years old when this photo was taken of him with the Glen Haven Baseball club, organized by his Uncle Henry Kuenster. Eugene was born in 1897, so that would make the date of this photo (Image ID: 96072) 1908. From his mother's autobiography: "Eugene’s hobby was baseball, and as he was rather small for his age, I encouraged him in it. This gave him plenty of outdoor exercise, and as they played in the school yard across the street from our store, I always knew where to find him when dinner was ready. About this time, my brother Henry organized a “Glen Haven Nine” and Eugene was their mascot. I made him a suit, which was an exact copy of the suits they wore, and he followed the games from town to town, thus making his debut in the baseball world. When he was eleven years old, the “Glen Haven Kid Nine” was organized. All the other boys were 15 and over, but Eugene took an active part, regardless of his size. They played some neighboring town every Sunday afternoon. I can remember many an instance where he caused comment on account of his size. One afternoon when their bus drove up to the ball park at Guttenberg, Iowa, and the boys got out with balls and bats, there was quite a roar from the bleachers, “Go, get the high chair!” but it happened that he won the game for them that day, and incidentally made quite a name for himself. Sometime after that I went to Dubuque on the J.S. excursion boat, and met a bunch of Guttenberg ladies. I was asked if I was a relative of Lambin, the ball player. Such a joke, but of course I got a kick out of it." |
