Nonpareial embossed mat. Inside the cased image is a note that reads: "113 years old when he died. He lived near Baraboo." "James Steele of Crawford Col. Co. Born at Sr(?)ugger's Gap, Blue Ridge Mountains, VA. Is now 92 years old. He has been west of Lake Erie 65 years in Michigan, Illinois, and 10 years in Wisconsin. Two years ago he rode a young spirited horse at a race that no young man could induce to mount & he says he would have won the race if the horse had not bolted. He is smart, and active & follows timing. Portage, Oct. 20 1856 by C.C. Butts." Documents related to the life of James Steele can be found in the Draper Manuscripts.
