Hemlock Bark

The front (top) and back (bottom) of a promotional card advertising the large amounts of hemlock bark in Northern Wisconsin. The image shows three men sitting and standing along a row of hemlock barns. The caption reads, "Hemlock Bark. - A faint idea of the magnitude of the bark industry and the great qualities of hemlock bark consumed by the tanneries in Northern Wisconsin, can be gathered from this view. This is only a portion of the stock at Rib Lake, Taylor County, Wisconsin, and the entire amount used up in one tannery within the year. The farmers have their share in the work of furnishing this bark. All that they can bring in is taken on delivery at $4.00 a cord. Thus it is seen, that the man who begins farming in this timber country, is not obliged to rely entirely upon the raising of crops. Besides, the hauling of bark occupies all his time during the winter months at good wages." The reverse side of the card reads, "A country for hog raising: 'the conditions prevailing in Northern counties of our state seem satisfactory for swine breeding. The factor of climate is of first importance. For on all this depends the kinds of food that can be raised, the management that must be given the hogs and the degree of freedom from disease.'" |

Part of the promotional materials created by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company Land Commissioner to publicize the sale of land in northern Wisconsin, primarily in Price, Taylor, and Ashland counties, owned by the railroad, circa 1895. One side of the card has illustrations of farming conditions, crops, forest resources, homesteads, small towns, and rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. A number of the illustrations are from photographs made by Harvey J. Perkins for "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker" and "Hand book of Price County." The reverse side of the card has text touting the abundance of resources available in northern Wisconsin, some of which was taken from "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker," edited by William A. Henry. |
